MLK Jr Day and THEIR STORY

"I have a dream that one day little black boys and girls will be holding hands with little white boys and girls." -Martin Luther King Jr

"Let us be dissatisfied until men and women, however black they may be, will be judged on the basis of the content of their character and not on the basis of the color of their skin. Let us be dissatisfied." -MLK Jr

Aren't those so powerful? I wonder what King would think of how far we've come? Shortly after we decided to adopt from Ethiopia and the big slow down happened there was a period when we started to look at adopting from Ghana. Ultimately, we never pursued this because all of the children would be much older than we wanted. When I was talking with this particular agency about all the details one of the questions I had was what type of background are the children typically coming from. My brother went to Ghana on a mission trip a few years ago and saw this first hand.

Their Story
Right now, on Lake Volta in Ghana, there are an
estimated 7,000 children who are in captivity. They
are modern day slaves.

Many of these children are as young as five and six years old. Some of them have been sold for as little as $20.

These children work fourteen hours a day, seven days a week fishing for their masters. They paddle, mend broken nets, and scoop water out of leaky boats. They usually eat one meal a day and sleep on the dirt floor of a hut filled with other slave children.

They do not smile, and they rarely laugh. Their childhoods have been stolen.
